Designed, modelled and analysed

Engineering Projects

Vehicles and machines I design end to end: the concept, the CAD for every part, and the physics that says whether it works. Each one opens as an interactive 3D workbench in the browser.

Holographic blueprint of the Joukowsky Dynamics car mid-conversion: its four wheels have swung up and outward on their hinges, with petal covers open around each ducted rotor.

Joukowsky Dynamics

A road car whose four wheels become ducted proprotors. Each wheel is a tyre on a duct rim with a 7-blade rotor inside; to fly, the car stands on landing legs and each wheel swings 90° up and outward on a hinge. Every part is modelled as a CAD solid, and the rotor blades are designed with the equations from NASA's Fundamental Proprotor Design Considerations.

  • CadQuery / OpenCascade
  • Three.js
  • Rotor aerodynamics
  • Momentum theory
  • Holographic sequence: watch the car assemble, drive, stand on its legs, open its petals, swing its wheels up into rotors and take off
  • Click any region (a wheel, the battery, the cockpit) to fly in and see it pulled apart, with a live briefing of what it's doing at that moment
  • 242 unique parts and 3,607 placed pieces, each with a datasheet, a three-view drawing and its own STEP file
  • Bill of materials, mass roll-up and centre of gravity computed from the CAD
  • Rotor calculator: blade twist and chord, stall margins, edgewise flow, power vs airspeed and hover endurance
  • Honest numbers: the analysis shows where the design falls short and what would fix it

Runs in the browser; best on a computer. A concept study, not a flight-qualified design.

01

Drive

Blades lock edge-on as wheel spokes and petal covers close over them; the hub motors drive the wheels.

02

Convert

Legs lift the car, the petals open, and each wheel swings 90° up and out on its hinge.

03

Fly

The rotors spin up and the car lifts off, then tilts its rotors forward to cruise.
